The zombie emerged from the brutal Caribbean slave plantations of the 17th and 18th centuries. The recent explosion of zombie films and stories illustrates how fear – while it may be a basic human trait – assumes the shape of particular eras and cultures. Recently, our culture has become fixated on the zombie. Like a Nietzschean superman, he represents the fear that the ordinary consolations of religion are bankrupt and that the only answer to the chaos of modern life is the securing of power. “The monster from the past,” like Dracula, comes out of a pagan world and offers an alternative to ordinary Christianity with his promise of a blood feast that will confer immortality. When nondescript and seemingly harmless young men turn into mass-murdering killers or suicide bombers, the “monster from within” has shown his face. “The monster from within” is the monster generated by our own repressed dark psychology, the other side of our otherwise bland and blameless human nature (think the Mr. James Cameron’s Terminator is a descendent of Frankenstein. His descendants are the robots, androids and cyborgs of today, with their potential to become all too human – and threatening. Frankenstein’s monster, is the monster we have built and believe we can control – until it turns against us. An awesome abnormality that we can’t predict and scramble to understand, it strikes without warning – like the shark in “Jaws.” While the obvious inspiration are real ferocious animals, they could also be thought of as embodied versions of natural disasters – hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis. The Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, King Kong and Godzilla are all examples of this type. “The monster from nature” represents a power that humans only think they have harnessed, but haven’t. Each corresponds to a deep seated anxiety about progress, the future and the human ability to achieve anything like control over the world. The fictional monsters created during this period can be categorized into four types. These writers – and many others – tapped into something pervasive, giving names and bodies to a universal emotion: fear. Lewis, Anne Radcliffe and Mary Shelley soon became bestsellers. The novels and stories of writers such as Horace Walpole, Matthew G. But while the fears of the demonic and the diabolical characterized medieval times, the changes wrought by the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution created a whole new set of fears tied to advancements in science and technology, and an increasingly crowded and complex world.ĭuring this age of political upheavals and aggressive modernization, tales of Gothic horror, haunted castles, secret compartments and rotting corpses were the rage. Of course, humans have always been afraid. Emotion was pushed out of the intellectual sphere by scientific reasoning awestruck spirituality had been repressed in favor of the Clockmaker God who set the universal laws into motion. The 1700s and 1800s were an era of revolutionary uprisings that trumpeted a limitless future, when the philosophers and scientists of the Enlightenment proclaimed that reason had the power to change the world. But a fifth – a nameless one – may best represent the anxieties of the 21st century. (Look no further than the recent rise of the emoji.)įor over the last three centuries, Europeans and Americans, in particular, have shaped anxiety and paranoia into the mythic figure of the monster – the embodiment of fear, disorder and abnormality – a history that I detail in my new book, “Haunted.” People often create symbols for that emotions are fleeting, abstract, and hard to describe. Sometimes the specifics vanish almost as quickly as they arose, but the addiction to sensation, to fear and fantasy, persists, like a low-grade fever. Now, with the rise of social media, fears and fads and fancies race instantly through entire populations. In the past, rumor and a rudimentary press coverage could fan the fires. It's all great fun and rarely gets tired.Description To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Indeed, even more than its predecessor, this outing relies on the 'floor is lava'-style approach, giving you the playground and tools to barely have to pound the pavement at all. The parkour mechanics are simply superb, with traversal over the urban upper reaches providing as much joy as swinging around New York in Marvel's Spider-Man.Īt the start of the game, it's a little frustrating as you cannot climb much or hang onto stuff for long due to a lack of stamina, but add a few points onto that stat and you'll rarely have to touch the ground again. Perhaps its most important aspect, however, is that it is hugely fun to play. The City provides a huge open-world setting full of stuff to do, while the branching storyline is engaging and attractive to multiple playthroughs. It is bigger, bolder and far more ambitious than its cult-hit predecessor. Our quick takeĪ few caveats aside, Dying Light 2: Stay Human achieves just about everything Techland set out to do. Add to that our excitement of replaying the game after to find multiple different story paths and side missions we had to skip in our first run, and we have to doff a cap to the very concept too. That we didn't find any of those in our multiple hours of play with review code on the PlayStation 5 is testament to Techland's decision. As such, it would have been easy to include several misfires, bugs and crazy design choices. Dying Light 2: Stay Human is a massive game that takes most of everything we liked about the first and beefs it up tenfold. You can, for example, create two side-by-side browser instances, each with their own tabs you can create tab groups you can "tear off" a tab into a separate browser instance and then recombine it you can assign a shortcut key to any URL and visit that URL just by pressing the key - and that's just for a start. Maxthon has far too many features to cover in a short review, but among my favorites is its great tab and window handling. And you can customize the interface, if you like, to cut down on the clutter. But there's a reason for the clutter: The browser has so many features, they need to fit somewhere. The interface is quite cluttered, with a file menu, Address Bar, Favorites Bar and other toolbars, and stray icons near the top and bottom of the screen. Those who like sleek design will turn away. It's got just about every feature built into competing browsers, and many that you won't find anywhere else - such as a "file sniffer" that makes it easy to download YouTube videos and a pop-up notepad for pasting or dragging text you want to save. If you're looking for a browser that bristles with power features, and don't mind a somewhat unattractive interface and some confusing configuration, then Maxthon is the browser for you. But if you want a stable, simple and no-nonsense Web browser (or one that can easily limit distracting content) Camino is a good choice. If you're looking for a more full-featured browser, you may want to opt for Firefox, Safari or Shiira. Like the add-ons available for Firefox, these tools offers various capabilities, from backing up bookmarks to changing the look using themes or skins, though the choices for Camino are more limited.Īll in all, Camino is probably not the perfect browser for everyone. I should note that some Camino add-ons are available. Sites heavy with Flash content and animations, in particular, seemed to load, render and function faster when I used Camino. When I compared it to Safari, Firefox and Shiira on the Mac, it outperformed those other browsers in rendering some pages. As with Shiira, Camino handled Flash, scripting and other complex Web technologies very well. Since Camino keeps its feature set small and targeted, I was not surprised to find it to be very stable it renders content both well and quickly. Combined with the Web features options that put a user in control of just how much distracting Web content he wants to see, I couldn't help thinking that this would be the perfect browser for people like my father - you know, the type of person who wants a cell phone that's nothing more than a phone. The approach leads to a simple design that implements the core features in an uncluttered fashion. Given that many Web browsers now try to implement too many features, some of which are better left to separate applications (RSS being a common example, which Camino eschews), I found Camino's straightforward focus refreshing. This is a pretty nifty feature if you repeatedly open the same set of pages every morning when checking sites (or if you use a number of Web-based applications every day).īeyond that, the features and preferences options are pretty standard browser fare, though I do have to commend Camino's developers for including a Web features tab in the browser's preferences that includes the options to block Flash animations and advertising as well as to prevent Web animations from repeating. For example, Camino lets you save the URLs for all pages currently opened in tabs as a set that re-opens all of them - in the same positions. It does have a few that, while not unique, are nice to have. In addition, one gets the impression that the developers of Camino didn't try to duplicate all the features of Firefox and focused on the core browsing functionality, which probably results in leaner code overall and thereby increased performance and stability.Ĭamino isn't big on flashy features. One major difference between Camino and Firefox is that Camino was designed and programmed specifically for the Mac instead of ported over as Firefox was (so it's less likely to "feel" like a Windows application ). With a look and feel very similar to Safari and Firefox, almost anyone will find it easy to work with in seconds I found myself completely at home with Camino from the second I launched it. Camino, an open-source browser based on Mozilla's Gecko rendering engine, is clearly designed to be a simple, easy-to-use, yet fully functional browser. The final formula weighed in at 1,329 characters! And I used the LEFT() function to chop the result down to the desired length. I glued together 40 repetitions of that formula to make a string of 40 random characters. This tells Excel to generate a random number from one to the length of the string and return one character at that location. I started with a formula that returns one random character drawn from that string living in cell D8: =MID(D8,RANDBETWEEN(1,LEN(D8)),1) When I first created this spreadsheet, I used a simple-minded technique to create a random password. The string of available characters changes to match what you did. Try it now change some of the Yes cells to No, or Nay, or Meh. But if that cell contains anything but Yes (regardless of upper or lower case), don't include it. What this formula says is, for each of the four character sets, if the adjacent cell contains Yes, include the character set. The & operator glues together strings of text. The formula to do that looks a little complicated, but really, it's just long. To start, we need to build a string of text that includes all the characters we've chosen to use. With the scaffold in place, it's time to add the formulas. The completed scaffold should look something like this: Add the Formulas That Generate Passwords Pro tip: Put the 0 last, not first, in the list of digits, or Excel will eliminate it. Enter the 10 digits in D6 and whatever special characters you want to use in D7. Now enter the whole uppercase alphabet in cell D4, and the whole lowercase alphabet in D5. Enter "Yes" in the next four cells below it. In cell C3, enter 20, or your preferred default password length. Skip cell B8, enter "Press F9 to Regenerate" in B9, and "PASSWORD" in B10. Starting in cell B3 and going down, enter the labels "Length", "Uppercase letters", "Lowercase letters", "Digits", and "Special characters". In cell B1, enter "Random Password Generator", or whatever title you wish for your project. Once you have it working, you can tweak it to make it totally your own. Please put things in exactly the cells as I describe below, so the formulas will work. Create the Password Generator Scaffoldįirst, let's create the scaffold that will frame our password generator, meaning the labels and static components. If you're not sure, Microsoft explains how to get the latest version. Office 2019 or later will do the job, as will the latest Office 365. You do need a current Excel version to make this project work. The difference here is that the bad guys can study the password generator embedded in any publicly available password manager, while they have no access to your home-built one. Note that this project necessarily relies on Excel's pseudo-random algorithm. It doesn't use macros or fancy stuff, just ordinary Excel functions, albeit some you may not have seen before. But building this little project doesn't require advanced knowledge, just the ability to follow instructions. You’re not going to cobble up a handmade antivirus utility. You're not likely to construct your own globe-spanning network of VPN servers, for example. Some security tasks are undeniably beyond the do-it-yourself realm. We can help you build it, using Microsoft Excel. If you're paranoid enough, you might want to create your own random password generator. In theory, a hacker who knows the algorithm and has access to one of your generated passwords could replicate all subsequent generated passwords (though it would be difficult). In most cases, though, the program uses what's called a pseudo-random algorithm. The question is where do you get those random passwords? Just about every password manager comes with its own random password generator, some of which are better than others. A hacker might guess a simple-minded password like Fido or crack it by brute force, but nobody could guess something like P5$e?KqA+unh$RhPTlp1, and brute-forcing it would take impossibly long. Once you have all your passwords safely stashed in the manager, replace any weak ones or dupes with unique passwords nobody could guess-and not even you could remember. Don’t try this without help-get a password manager. Do create a long, random, unique password for every website. Don’t use simple passwords like your birthday or your pet iguana’s name. I see you're afraid: your mouse is like your third hand! It's so useful and easy! Why would it be good not to use it? One of the advantage of Vim is to let your hands on the keyboard, without the constant need to grab your mouse.
